The Phenomenon of Cultural Intelligence (CQ) is not new, however, today, CQ is becoming increasingly important as we see many organizations adopting a more internationally collaborative approach and are increasingly likely to have employees from a wide range of cultural backgrounds to get the right talent in the right roles. To be successful when collaborating with international and culturally different peers must be done with proper management. Cultural differences can potentially lead to miscommunication, conflict and even hostility without understanding diversity.
CQ helps one to build and maintain a close or successful relationship with. Culture shock has four phases:
· Honeymoon
· Frustration
· Adjustment
· Acceptance
Leading Across Cultures entail creating a unique team culture where team members of different cultures understand group norms with reasoning so that people from different cultures may acknowledge the differences and what is expected.
If conflicts arise, encourage team members to look for cultural explanations, try changing the group structure, or, if all else fails, organizations should consider the suitability of problematic team members in their roles.
Remember: Effective intercultural management creates a more innovative and productive workforce. Once we understand this, you are on the way to leading across cultures!
